Reality check: changing diapers is probably not going to be your favorite baby-and-me activity. Having whatever it takes to make you and your little one most comfortable for swapping diapers (up to 10 times a day!) may not make the job any more fun, but will make the process a whole lot easier.
Do You Need a Changing Table?
No, you don't necessarily need a formal changing table. (Which is why we've included other options in this guide.) You can easily repurpose a dresser into a changing table by adding a changing pad on top. Some parents use the changer option that comes with their portable playard, while others just use an on-the-go pad (many come included with your diaper bag) on the bed, couch or floor.
If you do decide to purchase a changing table, some of the pros include an extra-safe place for baby (changing tables feature raised guard rails—but you'll still need to keep a hand on baby at all times to prevent them from rolling off), extra storage space and a comfortable bending height for those (many) diaper changes. You can choose a changing table to match your crib or nursery style, or get one that has drawers or shelves to use long after your baby has outgrown diapers.
When Do You Need a Changing Table or Pad?
The whole diaper changing thing happens instantly—so you'll need to be ready from the get go. You can continue to use a changing table until your child reaches 32 inches in height—the standard length of a changing pad—which will likely occur around their first birthday.
Bargain Buy
Why We Love It
IKEA once again comes in with this affordable, minimalist basic that blends into any decor. The Gulliver is easy on the wallet and easy on the back since you can change your baby with minimal bending. Use the two shelves for stacking essentials on their own or in baskets.
Keep in Mind
If you'd rather have a changing table that you can use as a nightstand or small dresser when your little one is past diapers, try the IKEA Sundvik ($169) instead. Still an affordable option, the top changing table folds up to create a secretary desk silhouette.
Modern and Minimalist
Why We Love It
If minimalism is your jam, we heart this 3-drawer changer + dresser combo from Delta Children. Sleek, simple lines, three drawers for lots of storage and a removable changing tray to extend usage makes this changing table a great choice.
Keep in Mind

Heirloom Look
Why We Love It
We pretty much love anything Jenny Lind, and this 4-drawer dresser is no exception. The beautiful spindle details and solid construction make this a functional and beautiful piece. It even features adjustable levers for uneven floors.

To turn this dresser into a changing table, you'll need to add a changing table topper and a changing pad.

Keep in Mind
The removable changing top with sectioned trays helps keep diaper-changing supplies organized, but you will need a separate pad to go along with it.
A Smart Changing Table
This clever piece from Delta Children tops a sleek kids' bookcase with a changing topper. The four cubbies can be used to store toys, books or other nursery essentials and will grow with your child after the diapering days are over.
Keep in Mind
This does require assembly, but it's pretty easy. It comes with a set of wood and a set of painted feet that you can swap out for different looks.

This compact changing clutch turns any location (think floor, bed, couch or even car trunk—we've done it all!) into a diaper changing station. Features include an extra-wide, cushioned changing pad with a pillow, a mesh pocket, a zippered front pocket and a wipes case.
Keep in Mind
This changing station is also great for stowing in your diaper bag for diapering on the go.
Choosing What's Right for You
Whether you choose to go all out with a changing table + dresser combo or just make do with a blanket or a mat to use for changing sessions on the floor, it makes little difference to your little one, as long as it's a safe spot. Choose what you think will work best for you and your family, and remember that making your baby clean and comfy is really what matters most.
